Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

We collect two kinds of information: personal information, which identifies you (such as your name or email address), and technical and aggregate information, which does not identify you by itself.

Information you give us

  • BirthBot waitlist. When you join the waitlist, we collect your first name and email address.
  • Messages you send us. If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write.
  • Payments. If you subscribe to BirthBot, our third-party payment processor collects your payment details, such as your card number and billing address. We receive only limited information, such as your name, email address, the last four digits of your card, and your subscription status. We never see or store your full card number.
  • BirthBot (when it launches). See Section 10 for what BirthBot will collect, such as your mobile phone number and the messages you send it.

We do not ask for health information on the Site. Please do not send us medical details by email. If you need medical advice, contact your own care provider.

Information collected automatically

Like almost every website, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical information when you visit, such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type, device type, the pages you request, the website that referred you, and the date and time of your visit. We use this information to operate and secure the Site, and to understand overall Site usage in a way that does not identify you.

Information that stays on your device

If you choose to see stories for mothers, fathers, or everyone, your browser saves that choice in its local storage so the Site looks the way you left it. This setting stays on your device and is never sent to us. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data.

What we don’t collect

The Site does not offer accounts or passwords, public forums, or contests, so we do not collect login credentials or public posts. We never store full payment card numbers. If we add new features that collect more information, we will update this Policy first.

2. How We Use Information

We use personal information only for the purposes it was collected for:

  • to send you updates about BirthBot, including when it launches;
  • to provide BirthBot, process your payments, and manage your subscription;
  • to reply to your questions and messages;
  • to operate, maintain, secure, and troubleshoot the Site, and to prevent spam and abuse;
  • to understand how the Site is used, in aggregate, so we can improve our content and Services; and
  • to comply with the law, resolve disputes, and enforce our Terms of Use and this Policy.

We do not make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects based solely on automated processing.

3. Legal Bases for Processing

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another place with similar laws, we rely on the following legal bases: your consent (for example, when you join the waitlist; you can withdraw it at any time); our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Site (for example, server logs); and compliance with legal obligations.

4. Cookies and Similar Technologies

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. The Site does not currently use cookies for advertising, analytics, or tracking your browsing. Our hosting provider may use strictly necessary technical measures to deliver and protect the Site.

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and site data. The only feature that uses your browser’s storage, the Mothers / Everyone / Fathers choice, will simply reset if you clear it. If we add analytics or other cookies in the future, we will update this Policy and, where required, ask for your consent first.

5. How We Share Information

We will not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share it only as described below.

  • Service providers. We use trusted companies to run the Site and our Services, and they process information only on our behalf: Vercel (website hosting), Kit (email and waitlist), and, when BirthBot launches, Twilio (text messaging), our payment processor (billing), and any AI service used to power BirthBot. Their use of your information is also governed by their own privacy policies.
  • Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a valid court order or subpoena, or when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of BirthX, our users, or others.
  • Business transfers. If BirthX is transferred to a company formed to operate it, or is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
  • Aggregate information. We may share statistics about Site usage that do not identify any individual.

6. How Long We Keep Information

We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, or as required by law. Waitlist information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or until we no longer need it. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a limited period. Emails are kept as long as needed to respond and for our records. Billing records are kept as long as required for tax and accounting purposes.

When you ask us to delete your information, we will remove it from our active systems. Some residual copies may remain in backups for a limited time before they are overwritten.

7. Your Rights and Choices

We believe you should be able to control your information. You can:

  • Unsubscribe from our emails at any time using the link in every email;
  • Access the personal information we hold about you, and receive a copy in a portable format;
  • Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • Delete your personal information;
  • Withdraw your consent or object to certain uses of your information.

To make a request, email us at hello@birthx.org with your name and what you would like us to do. We may need to verify your identity before acting on your request. We will respond within 30 days, or sooner if required by law.

Depending on where you live, such as the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, California, or another U.S. state with a privacy law, you may have additional rights, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for exercising any of your privacy rights.

8. How We Protect Your Information

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. For example:

  • the Site uses encrypted connections (HTTPS) and strict browser security settings;
  • secret keys used to connect to our service providers are kept on the server and are never exposed to visitors’ browsers;
  • access to personal information is limited to people who need it to run BirthX; and
  • we use established, reputable service providers that maintain their own security programs.

However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we work hard to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

9. Children’s Privacy

The Site and Services are intended for people 18 and older. Our educational articles are appropriate for readers as young as 13, but you must be at least 18 to join the waitlist, sign up for BirthBot, or make a purchase. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

10. BirthBot Text Messaging (Coming Soon)

BirthBot is an SMS-based childbirth education chatbot powered by AI. When it launches and you choose to sign up, we will collect:

  • your mobile phone number;
  • the messages you send to BirthBot and the messages it sends you; and
  • information you choose to share to personalize your messages, such as how far along you are and how often you want to hear from BirthBot.

We will use this information only to provide BirthBot, improve it, and keep it safe. By signing up, you agree to receive recurring text messages. BirthBot costs $9.99 per month, as described in our Terms of Use. Message frequency varies based on the schedule you choose. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out at any time, or HELP for help.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties, except the service providers that deliver our messages.

BirthBot provides education, not medical advice, and cannot respond to emergencies. If you think you or your baby may be having an emergency, call 911. We will update this Policy before BirthBot launches with any additional details, including how long messages are kept.

11. Links to Other Websites

The Site links to other websites and resources for your information. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those websites. Please read their privacy policies before providing them with any information.

12. Users Outside the United States

BirthX is based in the United States, and our service providers may store and process information in the United States and other countries. If you use the Site from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in countries whose data protection laws may differ from those where you live.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top. If we make significant changes to how we treat personal information, we will also post a prominent notice on the Site and, where we have your email address, send you a notice. Your continued use of the Site or Services after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
